New Years Eve Reflections: Over the last year, did things go pretty
much as you'd expected or planned, or did your life take a significant,
unexpected turn? Overall, was it a good year or one that you want to
put behind you as fast as you can? (canon or fanon)
Long after midnight had tolled the new year, Mister Smith lay awake while his family slept peacefully around him. Rose snuggled on the huge bed between her parents while Aille curled up on her side facing them, her arm draped lightly across her eldest daughter and fingers touching his hand. The cribs were pushed up against the bed so that the twins were also within easy reach.
Everything he held most dear was here, under this roof. Bliss and Joan and Serenity were in their own suite, naturally. But within in this very room was his reason for hoping. For living. For surviving.
Less than a year ago he'd come so close to losing them forever. Had lost them, not once, but twice. It didn't matter that he'd had the best of intentions or that others had been saved. He'd died, and in so doing had broken his promise to his family and betrayed their trust. If not for his very best friend and his beloved wife, he would still be in Hades and worse than dead. He would be alone, without his family.
It was easily the worst year of his life since the Big Death . . .
And yet. It was the best year of his life as well. Because somehow, some way, he'd managed to help bring something incredibly wonderful into the world. Twins. Two perfect, beautiful little babies. His babies.
His fingers curled reflexively around Aille's, giving it a gentle squeeze. Their babies.
How had he gone from a life of total despair and loneliness to being so happy and blessed? How had he managed to find himself in the middle of such an amazing dream?
He didn't deserve them. His Aille and their beautiful children. But he was going to do his damnedest to try. Whatever came in the new year ahead, he'd do everything within his power to love and cherish them, to keep them safe, and to somehow, some way, redeem himself.
